Not that a new Diablo game wasn't going to be announced, but that it would be so different that I wouldn't like it. Seeds of doubt started burrowing in my mind. The week before BlizzCon, I began feeling a little worried. When Immortal was announced last year, it was a surprise, but I didn't have any doubts that a PC Diablo game was still coming. There have been job postings for unannounced Diablo projects for years now, and work on Diablo 3 appeared to be ramping down. We all knew something was brewing for Diablo behind the scenes for quite a while now. Something about the Overwatch universe just makes me feel so good inside. However, I can't skip mentioning how emotional that Overwatch Zero Hour cinematic made me. It's a little weird missing out on the passion that other folks have for their chosen franchise, but when you only have two days, you have to pick and choose which awesome moments to experience. Partly due to the Diablo news, partly due to the lack of Heroes of the Storm news, but I barely saw half of the convention floor, and much of it just in passing. Unlike previous years, I did not explore the convention very much. Every year, I get to meet the people who keep the Diablo community running, whether it's the Blizzard employees making the game, the content creators getting everyone hyped, or the regular folks who show their passion by showing up for rumors and dreams. Every year, I'm lucky enough to hang out with my co-mods who help keep the various subreddits running. Even though I may interact with some of these folks online, there's something different about seeing them in person, seeing their faces and subtle mannerisms that make it amazing. Every year, I get to meet friends, both old and new. Blizzard could announce nothing at all, and I still would consider it a worthwhile trip.
However, the impressions and warmth will hopefully last long enough.Īs with every BlizzCon, this one was amazing because of the people. I'd like to say that I'll remember each one, but truthfully my memory isn't that good. Every day of this past week has been filled with amazing people and incredible moments. As I sit here, still slowly recovering from one Hell of a weekend, I just want to be thankful.
